Make your own microphone, (based on chapter 9 of Handmade Electronic Music, Nicolas Collins).

You will need:

  • mini amplifier;
  • solder pad microphone insert or similar, Rapid part number 35-0190 (approx 50p);
  • 9v battery;
  • clip leads or wires;
  • battery clip;
  • 2.2k resistor;
  • 0.1uF (100nF) capacitor;

Then follow the following instructions:

connect the battery ground terminal to ground terminal of mic (connected to the mic housing);
connect the battery hot terminal to a 2.2k resistor to the hot terminal on the mic;
connect the ground on the amp (one of the rings) to the ground on the battery;
connect the hot on the amp (the tip) to one end of the capacitor;
connect the other end of the capacitor to the hot mic terminal;

  • Make your own microphone using the instructions above. If you have access to it, there's a tutorial video available for chapter 10 of Handmade Electronic Music.

  • Contrive and document a short demonstration of the device.

  • Document the process with plans, photos and, yes, videos of it and of it working!

  • You can increase your marks by making the microphone more usable and robust. Also experiment with and document different resistors and capacitors.

  • Try increasing the value of the resistor in the circuit to 20K or so (rather than 2.2K) and then bringing the active speaker closer to and further from the mic. Use your hand as a filter for the speaker.

  • Media files
    You must submit media files, such as video, audio or image files, but please ensure that video files are compressed to a reasonable degree. You should never submit dv files, but compress these to mp4. You should submit no file that is greater in size than 25MB/minute.

  • Added value
    By completing the details of the task you will achieve at least a pass mark. By imaginatively and creatively considering how you might implement the task originally you can add value to your submission, and this added value may increase your mark significantly. Even when making videos of short demonstration tasks try to consider musical and performance criteria.

  • Suggested questions to consider answering in your logbook
    1. What role do you think the capacitors play in this circuit?

  • Include all these components in one section of your logbook. Include images within the logbook, and any audio or video recordings alongside.

  • Submit your logbook to the i-Centre by 2pm on Tuesday 8th May 2018
