 for instance, the way in which a painting cannot be completed from one corner to another...

Framing & framing with silence

making cultural references, (e.g. Magritte), making esoteric points, (e.g. Vermeer & dogs;
music & plainsong (e.g. Messiaen, Palestrina, Bach)

a common one is abstraction & non-tonality...
