The Practice Hut Project

Project List

The Project

Alas! Now that the practice huts are all but defunct, so is this project! However, it was such a nice idea, I'll keep it up here!

Students will work together in groups for this project. Each group will elect a 'leader' who will be responsible for arranging meetings, keeping a record of attendance, etc.

Records will be required for submission at the end of the project.

The basic idea is to come up with an interesting and exciting piece of performance art utilising between 8 & 10 of the practice huts as well as other areas of the car park should you wish. The final workshop will be on the afternoon of Friday week 8. The principle idea was for students to use the multiple pianos that would be available, as well as the outdoor performing area (otherwise known as the car park!). However, it should be possible to use other instruments or ideas here, if people wish. Basically, I want to hear & discuss your ideas as a group before we decide exactly how to play this. The duration of the finished item should be no longer than 12 minutes.

The practice huts will block-booked for Friday afternoons from 2.00pm for weeks 6 & 7. This is obviously quite expensive in terms of student practice time so we really do need to make the most use of it we can. Therefore the following times have been set aside for the rehearsal/improvisation/experimentation for certain groups:

Please bear in mind that you will need to organise performers for both rehearsals and workshop - you may use as many as you wish, but presumably there would be at least 8 required for each group, i.e. more than the group itself. Also bear in mind that there will be NO TIME for rehearsal on the day itself. Also bear in mind that due to the nature of the activity, AN ELEMENT OF THE ASSESSMENT WILL BE BASED ON QUALITY OF PERFORMANCE. You may, of course, sort out your own rehearsals independently.

NOTES: Bear in mind the following factors when planning your event:

Good luck!
