From Italian ponticello bridge of a stringed instrument, little bridge from post-classical Latin ponticellus little bridge, alteration (after classical Latin -ellus -ellus [suffix]) of classical Latin ponticulus little bridge (from ponti-, alternative stem of p?ns bridge + -culus).
