Experiment with Volume Env while using the main FM dial
ADSR
Modulation and volume envelopes down
Vol D (decay) up - any difference?
Mod D up gradually, playing
hold, how long is decay?
move vol D up and down, playing
mod and vol R (release) up, playing

experiment
settle on a reasonably sustained sound
experiment with the carrier parameters
experiment with the modulator parameters
experiment with monophony/polyphony
experiment with the presets and randomisation

Try doing the same sort of things with the following:

Ultrabeat
Use the left hand vertical 'piano' strip to audition sounds
Use the arrow key in the lower right hand corner of Ultra beat to turn on 
and off
Use the 'setting' menu in the top part of the window to choose different 
preset kits
Click on the name of a particular percussion instrument to edit it's pattern
along the bottom of the window
You can then use the numbers to turn beats on and off
Experiment with the pattern menu along the bottom
Experiment with the length menu along the bottom
etc.

Performing and recording
letter 'A' to reveal parameters
mini-menu: 'Off, Read, Touch, Latch, Write'
unless you know better only use 'Off', 'Read' and 'Touch'
When you record the track, 'Touch' records data
'Read' or 'Touch' plays it back or allows you to record more movements
